Max Marcilla is a reporter with DC News Now/The Hill’s morning newscast Sunrise on The Hill in Washington, D.C. He joined the Sunrise team shortly after it launched in the summer of 2025 and was tasked with telling stories about how national political headlines impact the lives of people living in the DMV (D.C., Maryland, and Northern Virginia). Among the stories he has reported: President Trump’s federal surge of law enforcement in Washington, the 43-day-long government shutdown, and the historic spill of hundreds of millions of gallons of sewage into the Potomac River.
Before joining the Sunrise team, he was a nightside reporter covering Washington D.C., Maryland, and Virginia with DC News Now. There,
he reported daily on breaking crime and weather, politics, and local issues — all with a focus on storytelling. His coverage included frequent reports and updates related to the deadly midair collision between a military helicopter and a commercial airplane near Reagan National Airport, and the deportation case of Kilmar Abrego Garcia.
Prior to a move to D.C., Marcilla was an award-winning reporter with NBC29 News in Charlottesville, Virginia, where he started his professional journalism career in June 2020. He spent that time reporting on the COVID-19 pandemic and city politics while telling the stories of Central Virginians. In September 2021, he was awarded Best Human Interest Series by the Virginia Association for Broadcasters for his story about the pandemic-era bond between a young boy and Charlottesville firefighters.
He graduated from the Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland in May 2020. During his time in College Park, he worked as a reporter and producer for Capital News Services’ live newscast. Off-campus, Max spent time at WUSA9, the CBS affiliate in Washington, D.C., as an intern with the special assignment unit.
He also previously worked as a production assistant at NJTV News, the PBS affiliate in New Jersey.
