Max Marcilla is a reporter with DC News Now in Washington, D.C. As a nightside reporter covering Washington D.C., Maryland, and Virginia,
he reports daily on breaking crime and weather, issues that impact the communities he covers, and local and state politics — all with a focus on storytelling. His highlights include extensive coverage of the deadly midair collision between a military helicopter and a commercial airplane near Reagan National Airport, an indictment of a police officer following a shooting, and the proposal that would have moved two professional sports teams from the District to Northern Virginia.
Prior to a move to D.C., Marcilla was an award-winning reporter with NBC29 News in Charlottesville, Virginia, where he started his professional journalism career in June 2020. He spent that time reporting on the COVID-19 pandemic and city politics while telling the stories of Central Virginians. In September 2021, he was awarded Best Human Interest Series by the Virginia Association for Broadcasters for his story about the pandemic-era bond between a young boy and Charlottesville firefighters.
He graduated from the Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland in May 2020. During his time in College Park, he worked as a reporter and producer for Capital News Services’ live newscast. Off-campus, Max spent time at WUSA9, the CBS affiliate in Washington, D.C., as an intern with the special assignment unit.
He also previously worked as a production assistant at NJTV News, the PBS affiliate in New Jersey.
